How do I qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits?

September 4, 2018

SSDI is a disability Insurance program for workers who become disabled before full retirement age.  Only workers who have worked and paid Social Security taxes for many years are insured by the SSDI program.

To qualify for the SSDI program, you must have work a certain number of years in a job where you paid FICA taxes.  You need to have earned a certain number of work credits.  You can earn up to four work credits per year.  To qualify for SSDI, you must have earned 20 credits out of the last 40 possible credits.

If you meet the work credit requirements, then you must also have a medical condition that meets the SSA definition of disability.  Your medical condition must interfere with basic work-related activities.  The condition must last or be expected to last at least one year.   Your condition must prevent you from earning Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) which in 2017 meant $1,170 per month for non-blind individuals.
